Description

Highlights From This Issue

In this issue we learn about the restoration of a tabletop spinning wheel from York, England. The spinning wheels and homestead of a family of wheel makers from Newtown, CT, are reviewed and a new Canadian patent holder is discovered.

Hardy Tabletop Spinning Wheel

David Bryant was asked to restore a tabletop spinning wheel stamped “HARDY YORK.” With help from Penelope Hemingway he learned more about John Hardy and his family. David describes the restoration process.

(Re)visiting the Sanfords

Although a fairly new spinner, when Kristen Olson acquired a wheel marked J. SANFORD, she reviewed what was known about the Sanford family of Newtown, CT. She adds her perspective as an architectural historian in her description of their homestead, which still stands.

Pettet’s Shuttlehead Spinning and Quilling Machine

Todd Farrell was told about a device with a name and a patent number. The name, MILES PETTET, was not on any lists from earlier Canadian researchers. His name is often spelled Pettit/Petit. Todd discovered that Petett had not one but two patents for spinning wheels. He describes them and what he learned about Pettet.
